Brian McDermott RIP

During my coaching period in MU Barnhall RFC I had the pleasure of working with Brian and the club under 14’s and 16’s from 1986 to 1993.

Brian was one of the most talented forwards coaches I have ever met and particularly when we were involved with the under 16’s he built a formidable group who played and performed well above their weight in games where we had limited numbers of players to pick from but never missed a game.

Brian coached the forwards and I coached the backs and our partnership was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

We were very lucky to have players like Warrick Bowden, Eamon Leach, Peter Smith, Conrad Burke, Trevor Brennan, Joe Looby Jnr, Garrett Fitzgerald, Greg Colclough, Andrew Deering, Keith Brennan, Ronnie Brennan, Kenny Charles, Derek Halpin., Brian Young, Donal Lennon, Brian Bolger and many others. All who had the greatest respect for Brian McDermott and treasured the knowledge he shared with the group.

I know all of us are very saddened with the passing of such a man, and his influence in the development of most of the group who went on to play for the team that brought the club from Junior status to AIL Senior level in 1999. His contribution to the club at this most important and essential part of the club was immeasurable, and will not be forgotten.

God bless you Brian and rest in peace
