August 24, 2013 Tullamore RFC 2nds Men’s Metro Prem 1 12 - 23

Our Premier B took on Tullamore RFC in Spollenstown last Saturday in the first of their Leinster Seconds Shield Matches.

The Premier B side had a lot of new faces in the team for the match and with pre season training going so well, the team looked will prepared for the game against the newly promoted Tullamore.

As the game kicked off it was end to end action as each side looked to draw first blood and it was the visitors who succeeded with a great try try after 15 mins after a wonderful break by winger Mark Kenny who recycled ball well and off loaded to new Blue Bull Rob Mullen who went in for a well worked try.

Number 10 Rob Troy missed the convert from a difficult angle to make it 0-5 after 10 minutes.

After the re-start both teams had there chances but could not convert them into points and the only other points of the half came from a Penalty for Tullamore to make it 3-5 at half time.

NUIM Barnhall changed the front row at half time with Colm Dufficy, David Ferguson and TJ Relihan coming on for Peter Courtney, Eoin O’Sullivan and Conor Harding who instantly made an impact in the pack.

A great passage of play from the visitors and some well worked back pressure saw Mark Kenny score in the corner and again the conversion missed saw the score go to 3-10 after 60 minutes.

Another silly penalty given to Tullamore in the Visitors half saw the home side take some points back to make it 6-10 after 65 minutes.

Shortly after the re-start Tullamore scored again with a well worked try and the with the conversion taken brought the score to 13-10 after 68 minutes and allowed Tullamore to take the lead.

This was now setting the match up to have a great finish and needed to the Blue Bulls to wake up if victory was going to go to the Blue Bulls.

This did not tale long as the Blue Bulls seemed to be re-energised and with the introduction of some more new faces in Nigel O’Shea in the Back row and Chris O’Brien on the wing enabled the visitors to go after that first win of the season.

Up steps our 2nd year scholar and lock Martin Houlihan who with a brilliant break from the back of a ruck managed a beautiful try in the corner and with the conversion missed brought the Blue Bulls back in front to 13-15 after 72 minutes.

NUIM Barnhall soaked up a lot of pressure in last 5 mins and sense victory was within reach. With a good clearance by Mark Kenny who managed to bring play to half way line and after a few good phases of play off a line out which allowed that man Martin Houlihan to step up again and ran rings around the Tullamore defence and with a great off load to Stephen Dwyer, Dwyer then just had to fall over the line to finish off a great Blue Bull try. With time up rob Troy drop kicked the conversion and left the final score 12-22 to the Visitors.
